Hiking in Shenandoah National Park

There are over 500 miles of trails in Shenandoah that range in difficulty from easy to very strenuous. If your coming to the park, do more than just go along Skyline drive, get out! stretch a bit.

One thing you will notice about most of the trails along Skyline drive. They all start by going down hill. This is not a good thing because that means the hike back is all up hill. Be sure to bring water and sturdy hiking shoes.

The Appalachian trail runs through the entire length of the park and crosses Skyline Drive many times. When you get to a crossing, hop out of the car and start walking!

There are many short, well marked trails along the drive, here is a sampling of a few of them.

Dogs are allowed on all but 15 miles of the 500+ miles of trails in the park. Most of the trails they are not allowed on are the short, busy trails.

If you aren't sure what part of the park you want to visit, take a look at this map.
